Orchestral Conducting Studio, new subject

The Orchestral Conducting Studio at the Escuela de Música Creativa offers a two-year course conforming to the highest musical standards for experienced musicians interested in discovering the world of orchestral conducting. The Escuela is firmly committed to this project, which comprises comprehensive preparation in all the techniques required in order to study, rehearse and perform a repertory, as well as practical experience, vital for all future conductors: continuous and regular work with music ensembles from quartets and choirs to symphony orchestras.

Andrés Salado is the Director of the Orchestral Conducting Studio. He is one of today’s most promising Spanish conductors. In his own words: “One of the characteristics that defines us as human beings is the possibility of communicating using words, our bodies, art or dance, a wide range of disciplines that make us precisely what we are: individuals in constant development and in search of ourselves. The art of orchestral conducting is the art of communication, the capacity to transmit colours, articulation, tempi and different moods, all this using a score and gestural technique”

This subject will be supplemented with master classes run by renowned teachers and conductors from both Spain and abroad, with the aim of training conductors whose unique and personal style is the result of a process of self-criticism, allowing them to make the artistic decisions necessary in the course of their professional careers.

Format: One weekly four-hour class, from 10 am to 2 pm. Another work session with some of the Escuela’s ensembles will also be organised each month. This session will last for four hours and will be held at different times of the day (depending on the ensemble students work with each month).

Number of students: A minimum of 8 and a maximum of 10, per level. During the first year of the program in 2012/2013, all students will begin at Level 1. In future years there will be two levels and, hence, twice the number of students.

Pre-requisites: Students should hold a higher degree in any instrument, although other possibilities will not be ruled out.

OBJECTIVES OF THE ORCHESTRAL CONDUCTING STUDIO:

  • To work through scores in detail using formal, harmonic, organ logical and stylistic analysis.
  • To carry out a comprehensive study of gestural technique.
  • To examine the repertory through its evolution and stylistic comparison in music history.
  • To develop the capacity to discover and develop students’ own conducting technique.
  • To take part in debates and discussions about aesthetic, stylistic and philosophical values defining the different periods of music.
  • To establish rehearsal and performance techniques through regular and continued work with different music ensembles.
  • To foster a critical spirit as a work tool and self-appraisal.
  • To continuously and responsibly monitor each student’s progress.
  • To endow conductors of youth or amateurs groups with specific tools in accordance with their needs (interestingly, much of the demand comes from this sector).
  • To provide practical and real experience as an orchestral conductor.
  • To teach leadership, management, programming and organisation.
